History

Miller Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was the dream of Presiding Elder Roy and Mrs. Evelyn Miller for a number of years.

Miller Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was the dream of Presiding Elder Roy and Mrs. Evelyn Miller for a number of years. With the support of Bishop J. Haskell Mayo, Miller Chapel was organized in 1990 and the dream became a reality. For nearly two years, the congregation enjoyed the kindness and generosity of the Village of University Park and Riegel Farm staff. Worship services were held in the second floor loft of the Riegel Mini-Farm Barn.

On March 28, 1993,  the congregation, led by the first pastor, Reverend Philip Ware, moved into its present location- a completely rehabilitated edifice that had been abandoned for several years. Reverend Ware provided the spiritual foundation, leadership and commitment to Miller Chapel’s founding principles: to “Equip, Encourage, and Empower God’s People.”

In June 1997, Reverend Charles Smoot was appointed as pastor of Miller Chapel and continued the commitment to the founding principles of the Church “meeting the spiritual needs of people and enhancing the total development of people and community.”
